CONCEPT

The Black Forest Cake Sessions started as a platform for sharing experiences and networking in the Corona year 2020, originally as a forum for interpreters around the world. The very first webinar was already attended by multilingual professionals from 10 countries across 4 continents.

The idea of virtual coffee breaks came up during a marketing seminar where we would have loved to explore some side topics in more depth but didn’t have the time to do so due to the training schedule. From the spin-offs on these coincidental topics and questions, a whole series of presentations and online meetings emerged, which continue to develop due to positive feedback — and now also extend beyond the original industry of language services.

In uniform and on parade

Guest: Thomas Iredale
Thomas Iredale recalls some of his experiences whilst serving in the Air Force in Germany during the mid-1970s. Although qualified as German interpreter, there was no formal training for the actual role he played. It was learning by doing and placed him in a unique position to mix with top-level personalities, both military and civilian.

We all feel uncomfortable thinking about it, but we need to discuss options: what happens if something happens to you?
In the event of an accident or illness, whether you are affected yourself or someone dear, who will take care of loose ends, who has access to your files and contacts, who can make medical decisions for you, who communicates on your behalf if you cannot do it?

Hidden Talents – New Skills

While discussing our emotions towards RSI during one of our recent coffee breaks, we realised that conference interpreters have various hidden talents and skills. Many of them might come in handy at some distant point in the future, if a pandemic hits and turns the world and our markets upside down. Want to explore these hidden treasures? Your colleagues might come up with great ideas how to use them …

- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS -

Will the sessions be recorded, in case I miss one?

The Black Forest Cake Sessions will not be recorded. By keeping group sizes small this platform intends to create a safe space for participants, where any questions can be asked and discussed that you could not or did not want to bring up anywhere. Any recording of the sessions, other than for internal purposes, would be contrary to the objective.
